Why is Crunchyroll not working on PS4?
Crunchyroll isn’t working on your PS4 due to a DNS server issue. This leads to buffers, lags, and streaming problems. Another reason is a software bug, causing the app to crash or malfunction. Other times, it’s due to a server outage. Finally, the Crunchyroll app might have a corrupted file.
Crunchyroll not working on PS4: 9 fixes
#1: Reboot your PS4
App malfunctions usually ask for 1 thing to get back up and running:
A refresh.
Why?
Because it unclogs errors or glitches that cause the app to crash.
So, here’s what you need to do:
- Hold down the PlayStation button on your controller.
- A pop-up menu should appear. Select “Turn off PS4.”
- Unplug your PS4.
- Wait for about 3 minutes.
- Plug your PS4 back into its power source.
- Relaunch Crunchyroll.
#2: Restart your router and modem
You’ve probably heard this a thousand times already.
But the truth is, most app issues are WiFi-related.
I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve had the same problem with other apps on my PS4, like:
And in the end, what mostly solved my issue was troubleshooting the WiFi.
So, here’s the next best step:
- Unplug your router and modem.
- Wait for 5 minutes (allows both devices to refresh properly).
- Plug your router and modem back into the power source.
Now, if Crunchyroll still fails to load on your PS4, then…
#3: Change your DNS Server settings
Put it this way.
DNS stands for Domain Name System, which you can think of like a phonebook of the internet.
But instead of storing contact numbers, it stores IP addresses.
These are numerical values that identify the location of a device or a website.
You might’ve seen this before: “192.168.1.1.”
That’s 1 example of an IP address.
And every website has one.
“So, where does a DNS server come in?”
Good question.
Think of it as a server that contains an entire database of IP addresses.
Just like how an external hard drive contains a ton of files, your DNS server works the same way.
But the biggest problem here is…
There’s a limit to how much it can store.
And once the server’s at full capacity, it becomes saturated.
In effect, various websites and devices trying to connect to that DNS server slow down.
Worst case, you probably wouldn’t be able to load anything online.
With that, let’s…
Manually change the DNS server settings on your PS4 and test the following:
- Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
- Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1.
- OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
- Cisco DNS: 64.102.255.44 and 128.107.241.185.
How to change your PS4’s DNS Server
Step 1: On your PS4’s home screen, scroll up and tap Settings.
Step 2: Click on “Network.”
Step 3: Select “Set Up Internet Connection.”
Step 4: Tap on “Use Wi-Fi.”
Step 5: Choose “Custom.”
From here, follow these configurations accordingly:
- Set your IP Address Settings to “Automatic.”
- For the DHCP Host Name, click on “Do Not Specify.”
Step 6: Click on “Manual” for DNS Settings.
Set your Primary DNS to 208.67.222.222 and your secondary DNS to 208.67.220.220.
After, tap “Next.”
Step 7: Select “Automatic” for MTU Settings.
Step 8: Choose “Do Not Use” for Proxy Server.
Step 9: Test the signal of your WiFi.
An option should appear on your PS4 screen, saying:
“Test Your Internet Connection.”
Proceed with the test to see if your WiFi signal’s stronger.
Then, open your Crunchyroll app.
If this doesn’t work, try the other DNS servers, as mentioned above.
Now, if you found this process a little confusing, here’s a video to help you out:
#4: Use an ethernet cable
A wireless connection’s great, but there may be times when it’s unstable.
As a result, this can cause apps to buffer or infinitely loop on the loading screen.
What next, then?
It’s simple: use an ethernet cable to get a more stable and stronger WiFi connection.
Here’s how to do it:
- Grab your ethernet cable and plug it into the back port of your PS4.
- Attach the other end of the cable to your router.
- Head to your PS4’s main menu and swipe up.
- Tap on “Settings.”
- Choose “Network.”
- Click on “Set Up Connection.”
- Tap on “Use a LAN Cable.”
- Launch the Crunchyroll app.
Note: Ethernet cables have an average lifespan of 10 years. And they degrade over time. So, if you haven’t used your ethernet cable in a while, you may need to get a new one.
#5: Reset the Crunchyroll app
Believe it or not, a simple app restart just might do the trick.
And all it takes are 4 easy steps:
- While you’re in the Crunchyroll app, press your controller’s PlayStation button.
- Tap on “Close Application.”
- Wait for a few minutes.
- Launch Crunchyroll again.
#6: Reinstall Crunchyroll on your PS4
If resetting the app didn’t solve your issue, it’s too early to say it’s over.
Why?
Because we’re going knee-deep into removing bugs and corrupted files with this fix:
Delete Crunchyroll and reinstall the app on your PS4.
Here’s how it’s done:
- Choose and highlight the Crunchyroll app on your PS4 home screen.
- Click on the “Option” button on your controller.
- Select “Delete.”
- Head to your PlayStation Store.
- Tap the search function (magnifying glass icon).
- Type in “Crunchyroll.”
- Select the app and hit “Download.”
- Once Crunchyroll’s installed on your PS4, launch the app.
#7: Free up storage space on your PS4
The biggest problem here’s that any device running low on memory’s more likely to…
- Overheat.
- Freeze or hang.
- Crash out of the blue.
- Have a much slower performance.
In fact, smart TVs also go through this, which makes people wonder why apps suddenly stop working.
Well, there’s your answer:
You’re using too much space that it leads to your device struggling to run properly.
And as a result, here’s what you’re going to do:
- Go to your PS4’s home screen.
- Scroll up and click on “Settings.”
- Choose “Storage.”
- Tap on “System Storage.”
- Look for files you don’t use anymore.
- Highlight the file and tap the “Option” button on your controller.
- Hit “Delete.”
- Repeat this process to free up storage space.
- Restart your PS4 to refresh the system.
- Launch Crunchyroll.

#8: Update the Crunchyroll app
Ever wonder why smart TVs need to update their software?
It’s the same reason apps require regular updating to…
- Resolve corruption in the app’s software code.
- Clear bugs and glitches that cause crashes or freezes.
- Improve the functionality and the overall performance of the app.
And that’s what you’re going to do right now:
- On your PS4’s home screen, select the Crunchyroll app.
- Press the “Option” button on your controller.
- In the pop-up menu, select “Update.”
- After the app finishes updating, launch Crunchyroll.
#9: Hard reset your PS4
When it seems like the odds are stacked against your favor, you’ll have to fight back hard.
And the best way to do that in this scenario is through a hard reset.
Basically, you’re reformatting your PS4 and wiping out all the data.
It’s like a massive flood that washes over and fully cleanses everything in its path.
The biggest downside, though?
You lose all your saved data.
But don’t worry.
I’ll teach you how to back up your saved game files and any crucial data on your PS4:
Note: You’ll need a USB stick or external hard drive for this.
- Go to your PS4’s home screen and scroll up.
- Click on “Settings.”
- Scroll down and choose “Application Saved Data Management.”
- Select “Saved Data in System Storage.”
- Plug a USB or external hard drive into your PS4’s port.
- Click on “Copy to USB Storage Device.”
- Select each file and copy it to your USB or external hard drive.
From here, you’re ready to do a hard reset.
Here’s how it’s done:
- Head to your PS4’s settings again.
- Scroll down and choose “Initialization.”
- Select “Initialize PS4.”
- Click on “Full.”
- Wait for about 3 or 4 hours for the entire reset to finish.
- Set up your PS4.
- Download Crunchyroll on your PlayStation Store.
- Launch the app.
If all else fails, here’s a bonus hack:
Try Crunchyroll on your browser.
The reason is that it could be solely the app that has a problem.
And in effect, it should work fine on a browser like Google Chrome or Firefox.
