Crunchyroll not working on Apple TV: 7 fixes

#1: Check your internet connection

For a smooth streaming experience on Crunchyroll, I recommend having at least 3mbps.

However, if you want to stream in better quality, shoot for 25mbps.

I highly recommend using Fast or Ookla to check your connection speed.

Reminder: It’s best to open these websites on your Apple TV’s browser. Why? So you know exactly what you’re getting for your stream.

Moreover, a great way to boost your internet speed is by switching to a wired connection.

Luckily, the process is quick and easy:

Take one end of an ethernet cable to connect it to your router.
Use the other end to connect to your Apple TV.
Wait for your device to automatically switch connections.

Note: Only the Apple TV 3rd Generation Rev A, Apple TV HD, and Apple TV 4K 2nd Generation have an ethernet port.

Here are a few tips to improve your internet speed without an ethernet cable:

Disconnect other devices from the network.
Clear any obstructions between the router and Apple TV.
Bring the router at least within 10-15 feet of your Apple TV.
Make sure that there aren’t devices using Bluetooth nearby.

Lastly, you should try to refresh your router using this method:

Turn off your router.
Unplug it from the power source.
Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds.
Turn it back on again.

However, these tips might not always work.

In this case, contact your service provider as it can be a problem on their end.

#2: Check if the servers are down

Crunchyroll servers might be inaccessible at the moment.

This can be caused by server maintenance, an overload of users, and even a cyber attack.

What you can do is download your episodes ahead of time. After that, mirror your phone to your Apple TV so you can watch on a larger screen.

#3: Update your Crunchyroll app

The apps on your Apple TV will update automatically as long as there’s an internet connection.

Open the App Store.
Tap on the search bar at the top right.
Search for Prime Video.
Select the app.

Updating your Apple TV is automatic. However, if you run into problems along the way, you can still do it on your own.

How to update Apple 4K TV/ Apple 4K TV HD

Head to Settings.
Select System.
Select Software Updates.
Select Update Software.
Select Download and Install if an update is available.

How to update Apple TV 3rd Generation or older

Head to Settings.
Select General.
Select Software Updates.
Select Update Software.
Select Download and Install.
Wait for Apple TV to restart.

Reminder: Updates can take a while, so be patient.

Additionally, you should make sure that you’re connected to a stable network. If your update stops mid-way, you can run into firmware problems later.

#5: Reset your Crunchyroll app

If updates to the app aren’t doing the trick, reset the app itself. There are 2 ways to do this: a soft reset and a hard reset.

For a soft reset

Press the TV button twice on the remote.
Look for the Crunchyroll app in the following menu.
Highlight the Crunchyroll app and swipe up on the touch surface on the remote.
Force stop the app.
Re-launch it.

Force stop can prevent the current issues that are stopping your Crunchyroll app from running.

If it doesn’t work, the data on your Crunchyroll app could be corrupted.

A soft reset won’t fix corrupted files. Instead, you should reinstall your app.

For a hard reset

Look for Crunchyroll in the Home menu and highlight it.
Press and hold the clickpad center or touch surface.
Press the Play/Pause button.
Select Delete.
Launch the App Store.
Search for Crunchyroll and redownload the app and its updates.

#6: Delete Apple TV’s cache

Stored cache on your Apple TV allows apps and browsers to load faster.

However, your device’s memory could fill up over time.Therefore slowing down your device and causing app problems.

Worse, the stored cache can get corrupted. With that, apps like Crunchyroll won’t work entirely.

To clear your Apple TV’s cache:

Go to Settings.
Select General.
Select Manage Storage.
Highlight the trash icon on all of the apps.
Select Clear Cache.
