Why won’t my LG smart TV save the WiFi password?
Your LG smart TV won’t save your WiFi password because of a glitch in its webOS. Perform a power cycle on your TV, modem, and router to fix that. Also, make sure to install updates for your LG TV’s OS. In addition, you may try to connect to WiFi via the Add a Hidden Wireless Network option.

#1: Power cycle your LG TV
If your LG TV won’t save your WiFi password, it’s likely because of an OS glitch.
Since 2014, LG has been using the webOS as firmware for its smart TVs.
It’s an excellent OS. But it does experience malfunctions from time to time.
And an easy way to fix that is through a power cycle. Or a device restart.
You may power cycle your LG TV by unplugging it. Or by using the remote.
How to restart your LG TV via a remote shortcut
- Press and hold Menu and the Volume Down button on the remote.
- Wait until the images on your screen disappear.
- Release the buttons.

- Press and hold the power button on your LG TV.
- Once it turns off, unplug it from the outlet.
- Wait for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Plug your LG TV back into the power source.
- Press the TV’s power button again.
After restarting, your LG TV should automatically connect to your WiFi.
But if it’s still asking for the password, proceed with the other fixes.
#2: Restart your modem and router
Another way to fix your LG TV’s WiFi problem is by resetting its network connection.
And the fastest way to do that is by restarting your modem and router.
The process is similar to power cycling your TV:
- Disconnect the modem and router from their power source.
- Wait for 30 seconds to a minute.
- Reconnect the 2 devices back into the outlet.
Give your modem and router a few minutes.
You have to wait until all of their lights turn steady. The internet indicator light should be green.
Then go back to your LG TV. And check if it can now automatically connect to your WiFi.
#3: Update your LG TV’s firmware
Now I did mention that your LG TV’s WiFi password issue is due to an OS glitch.
And if power cycling didn’t fix it…
There’s a good chance your webOS is out of date.
Bear in mind that LG releases updates for the webOS every few months. They do so to add features. It also lets them install additional apps.
More importantly, updates aim to resolve various OS problems.
So it’s a must that you keep it up to date.
How to update your LG TV’s webOS
- Press your LG TV remote’s Home button.
- Click the Settings icon on your screen’s upper right corner.
- Scroll all the way to the bottom and click All Settings.
- Select the General menu option.
- Navigate to About this TV and click it.
- Check the Allow automatic updates option.
- Select Check for updates.
If there are updates available, follow the screen prompt. You’ll find an option to download and install them.
Just ensure that you don’t switch your TV off during the process. Otherwise, the updates won’t install properly. And causing more problems to your TV.

Now, if your LG TV’s struggling to connect to the internet…
You may also manually install updates via a USB flash drive. You’ll only need to download the updates from LG’s support page.
But first, you’ll need to take note of your LG TV’s model number. You can find it on the back of your TV.
How to manually update webOS via a flash drive
- Launch a web browser on your laptop.
- Go to LG TV’s support page.
- Type in your LG TV’s model number in the search box.
- Click the model number from the dropdown menu.
- Under Software and Driver, download the latest firmware.
- On your laptop, Unzip and extract the downloaded file.
- Create a folder on your USB.
- Name the folder LG_DTV.
- Copy and paste the extracted file into the folder.
- Plug the flash drive into your LG TV.
Again, you’ll see a screen prompt to install updates. Just follow it. And your LG TV should install the updates from your flash drive.
Important note: The LG_DTV folder name is case-sensitive. Ensure that you spell it in all caps.
#4: Connect to WiFi via Add a Hidden Wireless Network
Connecting your LG TV to WiFi usually involves finding your network name from the list. Then clicking it. And then typing in the password.
But there’s actually another way. And that’s through the Add a Hidden Wireless Network option.
Now you’re probably wondering…
“What exactly is this option for?”
Well, it’s for situations where you can’t find your WiFi’s name from the list of available networks.
With this method, you’ll have to type in your home network’s name manually. Also called the Service Set Identifier or SSID.
But even if your WiFi’s name is on the list of available networks, you may still use this option.
It’s actually an effective fix to LG TV’s WiFi password issues.
Just follow the steps below:
- Click your LG TV remote’s Home button.
- Select Settings.
- Select Network.
- Click the WiFi Connection option.
- Select Add a Hidden Wireless Network.
- Type in your SSID.
- Type in your WiFi password.
Afterward, try performing a power cycle on your LG TV. Then check if it’s still asking for your WiFi password.
#5: Change your LG TV’s location settings
Here’s another effective workaround to make LG TV save your WiFi…
Change your TV’s location settings.
I know it sounds a bit far-fetched. Especially when the location settings are somewhat irrelevant to WiFi passwords.
But it’s somehow an effective workaround.
Here are the steps:
- Press your LG TV remote’s Home button.
- Click the Settings icon.
- Scroll down and select All Settings.
- Select General.
- Click Location.
- Select the LG Service Country option.
- Uncheck the Set Automatically option.
- Change your country to a different one.
- Click Yes to confirm the change.
#6: Switch off your LG TV’s Quick Start feature
Quick Start is a feature available on some LG TV models.
When it’s on, your TV goes into standby mode when you press the power button.
This is so the TV can easily boot up once you turn it back on. With that, you don’t have to wait for all the programs to load.
But while this is a good feature, it’s also known to cause glitches. And it can sometimes affect an LG TV’s network connection.
So if you’re using this feature, try to switch it off. And see if it resolves your LG TV’s WiFi password problem.
You may follow these steps:
- Press the Home button on your LG TV remote.
- Click the Settings option.
- Select General.
- Select Quick Start and toggle it off.
#7: Move the router closer to your LG TV
This one may not be common. But it’s still possible.
In rare cases, a weak WiFi signal may also prevent an LG TV from saving the password.
So a solution is to boost your LG TV’s WiFi signal. And you can achieve that by moving the router closer.
According to LG, the large surface of their TVs sometimes makes it hard to maintain a WiFi connection.
That’s why they advise that routers should be as close to the TV as possible.
#8: Connect your LG TV to the modem via an ethernet cable
Now if you’re still dealing with a WiFi password issue…
Consider connecting your LG TV directly to a modem.
For this, you’ll need an ethernet cable.
Just connect one end to your modem. And the other end to your TV’s ethernet port.
You may use a longer cable if the modem’s too far from the TV. Such as Jadaol’s 50-foot ethernet cable.
Connecting your LG TV directly to the modem is a quick fix. Not just for password issues.
But also when the TV’s not connecting to WiFi at all.
#9: Use an external streaming device
It’s also possible that your LG TV has a hardware problem.
In this case, its WiFi module may be defective. And that’s why its WiFi keeps disconnecting, or it couldn’t save your password.
This is a serious issue. As your smart TV won’t be so smart without the internet.
Good thing there are external streaming devices available.
So before thinking about repairing your LG TV’s WiFi hardware…
Consider using a streaming player instead.

#10: Factory reset your LG TV

But sometimes, it’s exactly what’s necessary to solve a particular issue.

- Press the Home button on your remote.
- Select Settings.
- Click the General icon.
- Scroll down and select Reset to Initial Settings.
The factory reset should take a few minutes. After which, your LG TV will reboot. And then you’ll see a welcome page on your screen.

#11: Contact LG for support
