How to change WiFi on Wyze Camera – 7 steps

Before we go to the steps, it’s important to point this out.

The only way to change the WiFi on Wyze is to set it up again. In other words, you’ll have to re-add it to your Wyze app.

This is because the camera saves your WiFi details via scanning a QR code. And you won’t be able to do it without repeating the entire setup process.

But don’t worry. It should still only take a few seconds. The Wyze camera’s pretty user-friendly, after all.

The only thing is…

If you own a Wyze Cam Outdoor, you’ll also have to delete it from the app first. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Wyze app on your phone.
  2. Select the name of the Wyze Cam Outdoor.
  3. Tap the gear icon to open Device Settings.
  4. Tap the Delete Device button.

As for all other Wyze Cam variants…

Deletion’s no longer necessary.

You may proceed directly to the steps below.

#1: Ensure that your phone’s connected to a 2.4GHz WiFi network

Wyze cameras aren’t 5G compatible. So if your phone’s using such a network, you won’t be able to connect the camera to the WiFi.

So how should you know if your phone’s WiFi is 2.4GHz or 5G?

An easy way to find out is by checking the name of your WiFi network.

Normally, service providers automatically attach the label “5G” to 5GHz networks.

So, for example, your WiFi’s name is “abc.”

The 2.4GHz connection’s name should be as is. While the 5G version should be “abc5G.”

How to check the WiFi network’s name on iOS devices

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Select WiFi.
  3. Check the network name of your phone’s connection.

How to check the WiFi network’s name on Android devices

  1. From the Apps menu, select Settings.
  2. Tap Wireless & Networks.
  3. Look for the WiFi name with the word Connected next to it.

And if you’ve confirmed that your phone’s using a 5G network…

Just see to it that you switch before proceeding to the next steps.

#2: Keep the camera plugged into an outlet

You don’t need to remove it from its location to set up a new WiFi connection. Just ensure that it remains powered on.

You should see a solid yellow line indicating that it’s on.

#3: Launch the Wyze app on your phone

If you’ve just recently updated the app, proceed to the next step.

But if not, you may want to install updates first before continuing. This is because you might encounter issues during setup if it’s outdated.

How to update the Wyze app on an iOS phone

  1. Go to your phone’s home screen and open the App Store.
  2. Type “Wyze” on the search bar.
  3. When you find the app, tap the Update button on its right side.

How to update the Wyze app on an Android phone

  1. Launch the Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile pic on the screen’s upper right.
  3. Select Manage apps & devices.
  4. Find the Wyze app from the list.
  5. Tap the Update button.

#4: Add your Wyze Camera to the app

Step #1: Once you’ve opened the Wyze app, tap the Home button.

Step #2: Look for the plus icon on the upper left of the screen and tap it.

Step #3: Select the Add Device option.

Step #4: Tap Cameras.

Step #5: Select Wyze Cam. and then tap Next.

#5: Put your Wyze Camera in setup mode

To do that, just press and hold the Setup button on the bottom of your camera. Release it as soon as it says “ready to connect.”

Then go back to the app.

Look for the checkbox next to the “I heard, “Ready to connect”” label. Then tap it and click Next.

#6: Connect the Wyze Camera to the new WiFi

You should now see a list of nearby WiFi networks. Select the one you’ll be connecting the camera to.

Again, ensure that it’s the same 2.4GHz network your phone currently uses.

Then type in the password.

There’s an icon in the text field that you can click to see the characters that you entered. Just tap it to double-check and ensure that the password’s correct.

After checking it, click Next.

#7: Scan the app’s QR code using your Wyze Camera

Your camera should be connected to the new WiFi by now.

However, you’ll still have to scan the QR code on the app. This is so the camera can save the new WiFi account details.

So just point the camera at your phone’s screen. And allow it to scan the code.

You’ll hear your camera say, “QR code scanned please wait.

After a few seconds, it should say, “Setup completed.

And as soon as you hear it…

Look for the check box with the label “I heard, “QR code scanned”” and tap it. And click Next.

You’ll now have the option to rename the camera. But if you’d rather not do it, just tap Finish.

And that’s it. You’ve just successfully changed your Wyze camera’s WiFi.

Why isn’t my Wyze Camera connecting to my new WiFi?

Your Wyze Camera isn’t connecting to your new WiFi because your internet’s unstable. It could be due to a service interruption on your ISP’s end. Or a glitch in your modem. Your Wyze Camera might also be too far from the WiFi router. That’s why it’s not getting enough signal to connect.

Wyze isn’t a security camera that can work without the internet.

So I can empathize if you’re feeling frustrated if it just won’t connect to your new WiFi.

But let me assure you. There are actually several troubleshooting solutions that you can do right now.

And they’re all effective and easy to perform.

So let’s go over them one by one.

#1: Perform a power cycle on your Wyze Camera

A network problem is the most common cause of Wyze’s failure to connect to WiFi.

However, before you diagnose your internet’s troubles…

It’d be wise to try to power cycle or restart your Wyze camera first. This is because you also can’t rule out the likelihood of a device glitch as the cause of the WiFi issue.

Besides, it only takes a few seconds to reboot your Wyze camera. Here’s how to properly do it:

  1. Unplug the camera from its power source.
  2. Wait for 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the camera back into the outlet.

Once the camera turns back on, it should try to connect to the new WiFi again. Just check its status on the app if it’s now online.

#2: Verify if your network connection’s having issues

Is your Wyze camera still offline after power cycling?

If so, the next step’s to troubleshoot your internet connection.

First, check how fast your WiFi currently is. You may do it via Google.

How to know your WiFi’s download speed

  1. Open a web browser on your phone or laptop.
  2. Go to Google’s home page.
  3. Type in “speed test.”
  4. Click the Run Speed Test button.

Now, if the result’s much slower than what you’re paying for…

You may then try to fix it. And the easiest way to do it is by also power cycling your modem and router.

How to restart your router and modem

  1. Disconnect both devices from the outlet.
  2. Wait for 30 seconds to a minute.
  3. Plug them both back into the outlet.

In most cases, this should be enough to restore the usual download speed.

So recheck your Wyze app. And see if the camera’s now connected to the new WiFi.

#3: Bring your router closer to your Wyze Camera

Another reason why a Wyze camera may struggle to go online is the router’s too far.

Ideally, the camera and the router should be within 10 meters or 30 feet of each other.

So try to bring your router closer to your Wyze camera.

But as an alternative to rearranging your furniture…

You may also opt to use a WiFi repeater instead.

This device essentially has 2 routers inside it. One is to receive signals from your original router.

And the other is for transmitting that signal to the devices that the home router can’t reach.

It’s actually a great gadget. And what’s even better is you just need to plug it in an outlet. Then connect it to your home router. And it should be good to go.

Now, if you’re going to ask me for recommendations, here are my picks:

All of those are less than $60. So they’re relatively affordable.

#4: Factory reset your Wyze Camera

If all the other fixes didn’t resolve your camera’s WiFi problem…

Then consider performing a complete factory reset.

Doing so will roll back all settings to default. And you’ll have to set up the camera again.

Just follow these steps to factory reset your Wyze camera:

  1. Keep the camera plugged into an outlet.
  2. Unmount the camera to access its Setup button on the bottom.
  3. Press and hold the Setup button for 10 seconds.

This should trigger the reset process. It should take anywhere from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes.

Just pay attention to the LED light. It should turn from solid to flashing red.

Once it starts blinking, the device is ready for setup. And you may follow the guide in the previous section for that.

#5: Get in touch with Wyze’s technical support team

So your Wyze Camera still won’t connect to your new WiFi.

Well, there might be some defect in the camera itself.

That’s why, at this point, you should contact Wyze’s support group.

You may ask them for additional troubleshooting guides. And they can also verify the warranty status of your device in case you need to get it repaired.
