Wyze plug not connecting to Alexa – why?

The Wyze plug isn’t connecting to Alexa due to improper setup. You must ensure that you enable the Wyze skill on the Alexa app for the pairing to work. Also, a glitch in your Alexa device may prevent the Wyze plug from connecting. And an outdated Wyze or Alexa app can also cause this issue.

Wyze plug not working with Alexa: 7 fixes

#1: Verify if there’s an issue with the power source

A Wyze plug works by connecting it to a regular outlet.

So if Alexa somehow couldn’t turn it on…

Check if there are issues with your smart plug’s power source.

To do that, disconnect your Wyze plug from the outlet. Then connect a laptop or a phone to it.

And if it’s not charging, you can confirm it’s a power source issue.

Now, there are outlets that you can turn on and off with a light switch.

So if this is the kind of power source you’re using…

See to it that the switch is on.

And if it’s still not working…

You’ll have to contact an electrician to fix it.

But in the meantime, just connect your Wyze plug to a different outlet. 1 that you’re sure is working.

#2: Ensure you’ve enabled Wyze skill on the Alexa app

There are now over 100,000 Alexa skills. But to use any of them, you’d need to enable them first in the Alexa app.

And the Wyze skill is no exception.

How to enable Wyze skill on the Alexa app

Now, there are actually 2 ways to do this.

The fastest 1 is by simply voicing out your command to Alexa. Just say, “Alexa, enable Wyze skill.”

An alternative method is via the Alexa app settings. Here’s how:

Step #1: Launch the Alexa app on your smartphone.

Step #2: Tap the More icon. It’s on the bottom right of the screen.

Step #3: Select Skills & Games

Step #4: Search for Wyze. Then tap it from the list.

Step #5: Tap Enable to Use.

Once you’ve enabled the Wyze skill, all you need to do is connect your smart plug to Alexa.

How to pair a Wyze plug with Alexa

Step #1: On the Alexa app, sign in with your Wyze account. You’ll need to enter your username and password.

Step #2: Click Accept

Step #3: You’ll see a note that your Wyze has been successfully linked. Tap Done.

Step #4: Click the Discover Devices button. And wait for Alexa to find your Wyze plug. This process normally takes up to 45 seconds.

Step #5: Tap your Wyze plug from the list of discovered devices.

That’s it.

#3: Change your Wyze plug’s name

Your smart device’s name can also cause issues with Alexa.

According to Wyze’s official website

A complicated plug name may make it hard for Alexa to follow your voice commands.

So you should instead go with an easily pronounceable label for your Wyze device.

Ideally, you should just name it after its location or the appliance you’re using it for. Examples are:

  • Kitchen plug.
  • Garage plug.
  • Bedroom lamp plug.

Now, this is how to change your Wyze plug’s name:

Step #1: Open the Wyze app on your smartphone.

Step #2: Look for your Wyze plug and tap it.

Step #3: Select Settings followed by Name.

Step #4: Type in the new label for your smart plug. Then save it.

Step #5: Launch the Alexa app on your phone.

Step #6: Tap Devices and the plus sign.

Step #7: Select Add Device. Wait for Alexa to find your smart plug with its updated name. Then tap it.

#4: Repeat your voice command

So you’ve already paired your Wyze plug with Alexa properly. And you’ve chosen a simple name for your device.

Yet, somehow, your voice command still isn’t working.

Well, it may simply be a case of Alexa not hearing you. So try to speak up and repeat your instruction.

In addition, it’s also best to do so while directly facing your Alexa device.

Moreover, try to minimize background noises if possible. And ensure that you’re within 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7.6 m) of Alexa while speaking.

#5: Power cycle your Alexa gadget

Occasional glitches happen on any electronic device.

And your Alexa smart speaker certainly isn’t immune to that.

In fact, it’s among the most common causes why this voice AI may sometimes fail to follow commands.

So what should you do in this situation?

Simple. Do a power cycle or a restart.

With an Alexa device, you just have to unplug it from the outlet. Then after 30 seconds to a minute, plug it back.

And while we’re still on the subject of restarting…

You may also do so with your Wyze plug. As with the Alexa device, just disconnect it from its power source. Then reconnect it after about half a minute.

#6: Check if there are issues with your WiFi connection

Check If There Are Issues With Your WiFi Connection

Alexa can still do some things without the internet. And so does your Wyze device.

But you won’t be able to control your smart plug via a voice AI without a WiFi connection.

So, verify if you’re having network problems.

The simplest way is to open any webpage from your phone or laptop. If it fails to load, then you’d know your WiFi is having issues.

You may then restart your router and modem to try to fix your connection. Just unplug both devices from the outlet. And reconnect after 15 to 30 seconds.

#7: Unlink and re-link your Wyze account and Alexa

The app for your voice AI can also malfunction occasionally.

And it’s another common reason why a Wyze plug won’t work with Alexa.

The solution to that is to unlink and re-link the 2.

Now, the way to do it will depend on how you connected them in the first place.

If you used the Wyze app for pairing…

You’ll also have to unlink from there.

And the same is true if you used the Alexa app.

How to unlink Wyze and Alexa via the Wyze application

Step #1: Open the Wyze app on your phone.

Step #2: Navigate to Account Settings and tap it.

Step #3: Select Works With and toggle it off.

How to unlink Wyze and Alexa via the Alexa application

Step #1: Launch the Alexa app on your mobile device.

Step #2: Tap Devices then click All Devices.

Step #3: Look for your Wyze plug and select it.

Step #4: Click the gear icon on the top right of the screen. This will open the Settings menu.

Step #5: Tap the Delete option and confirm your action.

Once you’re done unlinking your Wyze plug and Alexa…

You may then reconnect them. Just go back to Fix #2 of this guide and follow the steps there.
