FPS or Frames Per Second.
I’m sure you’ve come across that term while shopping for a TV…
Or reading reviews online.
But what exactly is it?
And how would you know how many of it your LG TV has?
Well, I’ve got all the answers to that.
Continue reading to discover:
- How many FPS an LG TV can support.
- How to quickly check the FPS of your LG TV.
- What FPS actually means and why it’s important.
- And this is just the beginning…
How many FPS does an LG TV have?
An LG TV can support anywhere from 60 to 120 FPS. However, 60 FPS might be the limit for most lower-end LG models. While 120 FPS is the average for the high-end LG TV variants. But this shouldn’t be an issue as movies and TV shows only have 24 to 60 FPS. And only video games can reach over 100 FPS.
FPS – The standard vs high-end LG TVs
So before diving into the FPS support of standard and high-end LG TVs…
You should know this first:
What FPS means
FPS stands for frames per second.
And to better understand it, let me compare it to something familiar to many.
Think of a flip book. I’m sure most, if not all of you, have seen one.
It’s a book with images per page. And when you try to flip through the pages, it’d look like the pictures are moving.
Well, movies and TV shows are essentially just like that. They’re pretty much composed of thousands of unique images.
And each image is being displayed on our screens at a really fast rate.
Now, the term FPS refers to the number of images shown per second.
For movies, the standard practice since 1927 is to shoot at 24 FPS.
So it means if you’re watching a film…
There are actually 24 unique images that are being displayed per second on your TV screen.
And it happens throughout the movie’s entire running time.
On the other hand, TV shows generally have a slightly higher FPS. Most contents these days have anywhere from 30 to 60 FPS.
And the higher the FPS, the clearer the video quality. That’s why, as some of you may have noticed, TV shows are a bit clearer compared to movies.
FPS support of low-end or standard LG TVs
Now, I’m sure you’re curious to know just how many FPS an LG TV can support.
And let me tell you. You won’t find anything called FPS on your TV’s specifications.
So, what you should look for instead is something called a refresh rate.
“What exactly is that?”
Well, a refresh rate is how often your TV can display images per second. And it’s measured in Hertz (Hz).
And the standard LG TVs have a 60 Hz refresh rate. That means it can show 60 different images per second. And it also means it can support content with up to 60 FPS.
So, for example, a certain TV show has about 30 FPS.
Since your TV has a 60 Hz refresh rate…
It won’t have trouble displaying the show’s 30 frames or images per second. Therefore, there’ll be no blurs or lags with the TV program when you watch it.
The only time there can potentially be problems is with games.
For one, some PS5 and Xbox games use as high as 120 FPS.
So if you hook up a console to your standard LG TV and try to play one of those games…
You’ll experience lagging. Moreover, you’ll see distorted graphics. And the game won’t be as quick to respond to your controls.
However, if you’re mostly just into streaming movies and series…
A low-end or standard LG TV will do.
And if you’re looking for recommendations, here are some LG TV models with a 60 Hz refresh rate:
As for the price, all of those models cost under $300.
FPS support of high-end LG TVs
Higher-end LG TVs can handle up to 120 FPS. That’s because these models are built with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
And it means that even if you play a console game with a 120 FPS…
You won’t experience any lags at all. And the overall graphic quality of those games will be top-notch.
Now, there won’t be any noticeable difference when it comes to movies and TV shows. As I mentioned, those types of media content have a much lower FPS.
So, you should only care about FPS and refresh rates if you’re a gamer.
I say so as you’d only be able to appreciate the difference while playing.
And since I provided recommendations for 60 Hz LG TV models…
I’d also do the same for those with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Here are some of the best ones:
And if you’re curious about the price, they all cost upwards of $500. Some of those models even go as high as over $2000.
But of course, the refresh rate isn’t the only reason for that. Those models are all packed with other features. Including:
- 4K resolution.
- OLED Display.
- LG magic remote.
- High-end processor.
- Split-screen capability.
- Surround sound technology.
So, all in all, they’re very much worth their price tag.

How do I check the FPS of my LG TV?
You can check the FPS of your LG TV by finding out its refresh rate. You can read it in the user manual. And you may also view it on your TV’s e-manual. Also, you may check your TV’s specifications on LG’s official website. Your TV’s refresh rate should be the same number of FPS it can support.
As I explained in the previous section, you won’t find FPS under your TV’s specs. So you should look for the refresh rate instead.
If your LG TV’s refresh rate is 60 Hz, it can support contents up to 60 FPS. And the same logic applies to models with a 120 Hz rate.
Now, you may be wondering…
“Where can I find my LG TV’s refresh rate?”
Well, don’t worry. There are 3 different ways to do it. And I’ll be walking you through each one.
But first, you’ll have to know your TV’s model number.
“Where can I find it?”
You should be able to see it at the back of your TV. There should be a sticker there indicating that.
However, if you can’t find it there, you may:
Look for your LG TV model number using the Settings menu
- Press the Home button on your remote.
- Navigate to Settings and select it.
- Scroll down and select All Settings.
- Click the General option.
- Select About this TV.
- Select TV Information and look for the model number.
Easy, right?

Why is FPS important?
FPS is important because it helps determine the overall quality of the image on your TV. The higher the FPS that your TV supports, the clearer the image. And that’s especially true when it comes to gaming. The game will be more responsive when you play on a TV with high FPS support.
Now, a TV’s FPS support and refresh rate are important if you’re a gamer. And if you’re planning to use your TV mostly for playing on consoles like PS5 or Xbox.
However, if you’ll be using your TV strictly for streaming from Netflix and other apps…
You shouldn’t pay much attention to the FPS and refresh rate. Even lower-end LG TVs can perfectly handle the FPS of most movies and series.
So if you’re only after a clear display…
What you should look for instead is the resolution.
The TVs with the best image have at least a 4K display. And you can even find some models now with 8K.
Basically, the higher the resolution, the more pixels. And that means the TV display will have a clearer and more vibrant image.
