  • The most common reasons your LG monitor doesn’t have any sound.
  • And this is just the beginning…

Why is the sound of my LG monitor not working?

The sound of your LG monitor isn’t working because you haven’t set it as your default audio source. This issue also happens if your device’s volume is too low or muted. Sometimes, you can’t hear anything from your LG monitor because it doesn’t have built-in speakers.

LG monitor sound not working: 7 fixes

#1: Ensure your monitor has built-in speakers

If you haven’t played any audio from your monitor before…

You should double-check whether your device indeed has built-in speakers.

After all, some LG monitors don’t have them.

Now, don’t worry.

This process is pretty simple and won’t take more than a few minutes.

So, just follow along with my guide to…

Check if your monitor’s model has built-in speakers:

Step 1: Take note of your device’s model number

You’ll usually find this on a sticker at the back of your monitor.

Or on your device’s user manual and specification sheet.

Once you have this information…

Step 2: Look up your monitor’s model on LG’s official site

Head to this webpage

Then, tap the magnifying glass icon at the top-right of your screen.

Once the search bar appears…

Input your LG monitor’s model number to look it up.

Step 3: Select your device

If you typed your monitor’s model number correctly…

Its name and image will appear under the enlarged search bar.

So, simply select your device’s name. Then, proceed to…

Step 4: Tap SPECS

You’ll find this heading under your monitor’s image.

Step 5: Verify whether your monitor has speakers

Under the Sound heading…

Find the bolded text “Speaker.”

Then, read the information on its right.

If it says “NO,” your device doesn’t have built-in speakers.

So, in order to play sound from your monitor…

You need to use external audio devices.

However, if you see a “Yes” or a series of letters and numbers…

Your LG monitor has built-in speakers.

So, you can continue with the solutions down below.

#2: Set your monitor as your default audio source

Whether you’re using a macOS or Windows device…

Your system allows you to choose how you want to hear its audio.

So, the reason you can’t hear anything from your monitor may simply be because…

It’s not your device’s default audio source.

Luckily, fixing this type of problem is a piece of cake.

So, just follow these steps to…

Make your LG monitor your default audio output device (Windows):

Step 1: Head to your PC’s Control Panel

Open your computer’s search bar.

Then, type and search “Control Panel” to launch the app.

Step 2: Tap Hardware and Sound

You’ll find this option on the left side of your screen.

Step 3: Choose Sound

It’s the 3rd speaker icon from the top of the window.

Step 4: Select your monitor’s name from the list

Unsure of your device’s model number?

Then, simply highlight the option with the monitor icon.

Step 5: Click Set Default

You’ll find this button near the bottom of the window.

Not a Windows user?

I got you.

Here are the steps to…

Adjust your Mac’s audio settings:

Step 1: Launch your device’s Settings app

Just tap the gear-looking icon at the bottom of your Mac’s screen to do so.

Step 2: Click Sound

It’s the option with the speaker icon.

Step 3: Select Output

You’ll find this button at the top of the window.

In between the options Sound Effects and Input.

Step 4: Select your LG monitor from the list

Note: If your Mac doesn’t have other audio devices, your monitor’s name may appear as “Internal Speakers.”

And now that you’ve ensured your device uses the right default audio source…

Try playing any media files with sound.

And if you still can’t hear anything from your LG monitor…

#3: Increase your device’s volume

As someone who fixes and fiddles around with gadgets daily…

Silly mistakes happen all the time.

So, you might think your monitor’s speakers are broken because they can’t produce sounds.

When, in fact, you may have simply left your device on mute.

Believe it or not…

Increasing the volume is how I “fixed” my Insignia TV’s sound problem as well.

So, take this time to…

Ensure your LG monitor isn’t just muted:

Step 1: Increase the volume through your monitor’s joystick button

This component’s exact location depends on your specific LG monitor.

But most of the time…

You’ll find this at the bottom of your device’s screen.

Note: You can change the volume by dragging the joystick to the left or right.

Step 2: Make sure your device’s system has enough volume

Windows:

  1. Tap the speaker icon at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Drag the volume slider to the right.
  3. Make sure its value isn’t lower than 75.

Mac:

  1. Click the speaker icon at the top-right section of your screen.
  2. Drag the slider upward until the volume level is (nearly) full.

Note: You should also double-check that the media file you’re using to test your audio isn’t muted.

#4: Enable your device’s loudness equalization

Note: For Windows devices only.

PCs have a feature called loudness equalization.

And simply speaking…

It ensures that your device’s loudness stays consistent.

Regardless of the actual volume level of your audio source.

Now, your monitor’s sound may not be working because of unstable audio levels.

So, you should go ahead and…

Enable your PC’s loudness equalization feature:

Step 1: Launch your computer’s Control Panel

Open your PC’s search bar.

Then, type “Control Panel” and press Enter on your keyboard.

Step 2: Select Hardware and Sound

On the left side of the window…

This is the 3rd option from the top.

Step 3: Select Sound

The one with the speaker icon.

Step 4: Highlight your default audio device

In other words, your monitor.

Step 5: Click Properties

You’ll find this at the bottom section of the window.

Step 6: Tap Enhancements

This option is 1 of the new window’s headings.

Step 7: Click the Loudness Equalization box

After doing so, tap Apply to save your changes.

#5: Update your audio driver

Note: Windows devices only.

As you may know already…

Your PC has several Drivers in its system.

And simply speaking…

They’re like translators that help your computer’s components communicate.

For example, an audio driver is responsible for connecting your device with its:

  • Speakers.
  • Headsets.
  • Microphones.
  • Internal sound cards.

So, if this piece of software is glitching or malfunctioning…

Your computer and its monitor will also have audio problems.

Luckily though, most of the time…

Audio drivers only encounter glitches or bugs if they’re outdated.

So, to fix them, all you need to do is…

Follow these steps to update your PC’s audio drive:

Step 1: Launch your PC’s Device Manager

Here’s the fastest way to do so:

Press Windows + X simultaneously on your keyboard.

Then when a small window shows up, tap M.

Not a fan of shortcuts?

Then, follow these simple steps:

  1. Tap your PC’s search bar,
  2. Type “Device Manager.”
  3. Press Enter on your keyboard.

Once it’s open…

Step 2: Expand Sound, video, and game controllers

Your Device Manager’s list is in alphabetical order.

So it’ll be pretty easy to find this option.

Note: You need to double-click this selection to expand it.

Step 3: Right-click the driver you’re using

Pro tip: If you see multiple drivers and don’t know which one you use, update each of them.

Step 4: Select Update Driver

This is the first option on the list that appears.

Step 5: Choose Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software

Then, simply wait for your audio driver to be updated.

Step 6: Restart your computer

Once you’ve restarted your PC…

Try using your monitor’s speakers again.

And if you still can’t hear anything…

#6: Update your device

Outdated gadgets are magnets to glitches and bugs.

Which are usually the leading cause of audio problems.

So, if your LG speakers still can’t play sounds…
