Why does my Insignia TV have no sound?

Your Insignia TV has no sound because your audio format setting isn’t set to “PCM.” Other times, it should be set to “Stereo.” Another major cause is a faulty audio cable connection. It could also be a TV system glitch. Lastly, the root cause of the Insignia no sound issue may be a damaged speaker.

Insignia TV no sound: 9 fixes

#1: Check if your Insignia TV’s set to mute

Let’s start with the most basic and easiest fix.

As odd as this sounds, this can happen at any point by accident.

For example.

Did you wake up one day and find your Insignia TV volume not working out of the blue?

Well, here’s what could’ve happened:

Your Insignia TV simply could’ve been accidentally set to “Mute.”

So, what do you do?

Simple.

Press the “Mute” button on the remote to unmute your Insignia TV.

But if that doesn’t work, don’t worry.

I said most basic and easiest for a reason.

As you’ll learn in the later sections, some fixes require a little more legwork.

However, that also means they’re much more effective.

#2: Unplug your TV from its power source

“Another basic fix?”

Yes – but for a good reason.

Because your Insignia TV no sound issue might not just be a software glitch.

It could also be that your TV’s not receiving enough power supply.

And in effect, it can’t operate properly.

After all, what’s 1 minute of unplugging your TV going to cost you?

If it means solving your Insignia no-sound problem, it’s a small price to pay, right?

So, let’s go ahead and do that:

  1. Unplug your Insignia TV from its power source.
  2. Wait for at least 3 or 5 minutes so your TV’s system can refresh.
  3. Plug your Insignia TV back into its power source.

See – that hardly required any effort, right?

From here, test all your TV channels.

Still don’t hear a sound?

Before diving into the next fix, there’s 1 more solution worth trying:

Plug your Insignia TV into a different wall outlet.

“Why should I?”

Remember how I said earlier that it might be a power supply problem?

Well, let’s test that out by trying a different wall outlet.

If this fixes your problem, it means one of your outlets is faulty.

And in that case, you should contact your electrician to repair the wires immediately.

But if this fix still doesn’t work, you’ll have to…

#3: Disconnect all devices from your Insignia TV

Granted, this fix takes a little more legwork than the other 2 fixes.

But here’s why you need to do this:

Your audio cables could be the culprit behind your sound issue.

Looking for a concrete scenario?

Here’s a good one:

Say your cable set-top box’s AV cables are faulty or worn out.

In cases like these, it’s only safe to assume that your Insignia TV’s unable to produce audio.

Not to mention, if your Insignia TV ports are damaged, this can lead to sound issues too.

So, you’re probably wondering…

“How do I know whether my cable or TV port’s the problem?”

There are 2 ways to go about this:

  1. Detach all your cables and replug them back in.
  2. Try plugging a different cable into your Insignia TV’s port.

Let’s go over the 1st method:

  1. Turn off your Insignia TV.
  2. Disconnect all your Insignia TV cables.
  3. Turn your Insignia TV back on.
  4. Replug each cable one at a time.

If you discover that your Insignia TV’s sound suddenly returns, you know the issue, right?

Ultimately, this troubleshooting procedure tells you if your cables are faulty or not.

This brings us to our 2nd method:

  1. Buy a new cable to replace the faulty one.
  2. Attach the cable to your Insignia TV’s respective port.
  3. Test for any sound coming out of your Insignia TV.

If both of these fixes fail, don’t assume the worst just yet.

It’s not time to throw in the towel.

Because it may be an incorrect Insignia TV setting, which you’ll learn more about below.

#4: Reset your Inisgnia’s audio settings

Reset Audio Settings If Your Insignia TV Has No Sound

So your Insignia TV wants to do this the hard way, eh?

Well, I’ve got the best fix to break its hard-boiled shell:

Reset your audio settings.

The only downside to this fix?

You’ll have to manually configure any audio setting you’ve set before.

But the best part is, that all your Insignia TV sound problems are out the window.

Not to mention, a complete reset should also fix any Insignia TV low volume problems.

Here’s how to reset your Insignia TV’s audio settings:

  1. Press the “Menu” button on your Insignia TV remote.
  2. A pop-up menu should appear.
  3. Select “Audio.”
  4. Scroll down and click on “Reset Audio Settings.”
  5. Wait for the reset process to finish.
  6. Turn off your Insignia TV.
  7. Wait for 1 minute.
  8. Turn your Insignia TV back on.
  9. Test your channels for any sound.

#5: Do a channel rescan

Still experiencing Insignia TV volume problems?

Here’s 1 odd fix that could solve your issue:

By doing a total channel rescan.

“My Insignia TV has no sound. Why should I do this?”

Because this Insignia no sound issue might only be happening to certain channels.

In other words, only a specific channel on your Insignia TV might be affected.

And the worst case, this software glitch may even affect other Insignia channels.

But don’t worry.

Doing a complete channel rescan only takes minutes to do.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Tap the “Menu” button on your Insignia TV remote.
  2. Scroll left and click on “Channels.”
  3. Tap on “Auto Channel Search.”
  4. This process can take several minutes to complete.
  5. After the channel rescan, test for any audio in your Insignia TV.

#6: Check if external speakers or Bluetooth headphones are connected

Sometimes, the cure for your Insignia TV sound not working issue’s profoundly simple:

An external speaker or Bluetooth headphone causes interference.

Quite simply, either of these devices is plugged into your Insignia TV.

And in effect, the sound’s coming out of your headphone or external speaker.

Sound familiar?

In fact, this issue is more common in headphones.

Why?

Because it’s too easy to forget you turned on your Bluetooth headphones or are in sync with the TV.

Luckily though, this fix – as mentioned earlier – is incredibly simple:

Just unplug the external speaker or shut off your Bluetooth headphones.

#7: Set Insignia’s audio to “PCM”

Recently installed a home theater system or soundbar?

Could it be an Insignia soundbar not working problem?

Or perhaps, you forgot to set the right audio setting for your home theater and soundbar.

So, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Hit the “Menu” button on your Insignia TV remote.
  2. Go to “Audio.”
  3. Select “Digital Audio Format/Audio Delay.”
  4. Tap on “Audio Format.”
  5. Change and set it to “PCM.”

Now – hold on for just a minute.

We’re not fully done yet.

If you have an external streaming device installed, change the audio settings too.

For instance.

Say you have an Apple TV plugged into your Insignia TV.

You’ll have to change the “Audio Format” by doing the following:

  1. Head to your Apple TV’s settings menu (gear icon).
  2. Tap on “Video and Audio.”
  3. Select “Audio Format.”
  4. Toggle the “Change Format” to “On.”
  5. Scroll down and tap on “New Format.”
  6. Set your Apple TV audio format to “PCM.”
  7. Choose “Stereo” if “PCM” is not available.

Now, take note.

This also applies to other streaming devices like Chromecast, Roku, and FireStick.

#8: Do a factory reset

Trust me – this isn’t the worst-case scenario yet.

Think of a factory reset as a way to refresh your entire Insignia TV system completely.

Frankly speaking, this type of reset erases all your data.

But, at the same time, it removes all software glitches and corrupted files.

Now, why is this necessary?

Mainly because if a corrupted file or glitch damages your Insignia TV system, it means…

A ton of problems could happen.

For example.

Your Insignia TV doesn’t turn on suddenly.

Apart from Insignia TV no sound issues, corrupted files could also harm your apps.

And ultimately, a factory reset’s main job is to get rid of any TV threats.

Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Press the “Menu” button on your Insignia TV remote.
  2. Navigate to “Settings.”
  3. Select “Device & Software.”
  4. Choose “Reset to Factory Default.”
  5. Give your Insignia TV time to complete the entire process.
  6. Test for any audio.

In case you own an Insignia Fire TV instead, here’s how to do a factory reset on it:

#9: Replace your Insignia’s speakers

The worst that can happen when your Insignia TV has no sound?

Your TV speakers are worn down.

In other words, you’ll have to replace your Insignia speakers to fix your sound issue.

As painful as this sounds, it doesn’t always mean your Insignia TV’s too old.

It could be that your speakers were defective.

And finally, a power outage could’ve caused damage to your TV speakers.

Which permanently leads to a broken or worn down speaker.

Either way, the only fix for damaged Insignia TV speakers is to have them replaced.

That said, it’s not quite as simple as a DIY fix.

Instead, you’ll need to contact a professional for this.

From here, you have 2 options:

  1. Email Insignia’s customer support team.
  2. Contact them directly to avoid waiting at: “1-877-467-4289.”
