How to listen to Apple Music offline? 5 steps
#1: Open the app
If you have an iOS device, Apple Music is already preinstalled on your phone.

Now that you have the app, find it on your home screen to open it.
After doing so…
#2: Sign in to your account
If you’re new to Apple Music…
Then before you can sign in, you need to subscribe to their service 1st.

#3: Find the playlist or song you want
If you already have the songs you wish to play offline saved in your Library…
You can simply skip this step.
But if this is your 1st time setting up the app…
Then it’s safe to assume that you don’t have any songs in your Library yet.
“Wait, what’s that?”
It’s where the app stores your saved songs and playlists.
You can think of it as your personal jukebox inside this huge music platform.
If you like a song or an album, simply add it here so you can access it anytime.
“How can I do that?”
It’s easy.
Here’s how you can add songs to your Apple Music Library:
- Touch and hold the song, playlist, or album that you want.
- Let go when a menu appears.
- Tap the Add to Library option.
And if you’re viewing the contents of an album or playlist on your fullscreen…
Here’s how you can add it to your Library:
- Tap the (+) icon at the top of your screen.

#4: Download the songs
I mentioned that your Library is like your personal jukebox earlier.
But although it’s a space where you can add your personalized playlists…
You can’t stream these songs offline unless you download them to your device.
But don’t worry.
Downloading your songs is easy as adding them to your Library.
Moreover, there are 2 ways you can go around this process.
So just pick the 1 that’s most convenient for you.
If you want to individually pick the tracks you wish to play offline, here’s how you can…
Manually download songs on your mobile device:
- At the bottom of your screen, click Library.
- You’ll see all your saved songs and playlists here.
- Find the title you wish to play offline.
- Touch and hold it until a window appears.
- Tap Download from the choices.
But if you want to download all the tracks in your Apple Music Library for offline streaming…
Here’s how you can download all your songs:
- On your phone, head to Settings.
- Find the Apple Music app and click it.
- Scroll down until you find Automatic Downloads.
- Toggle this option ON.
Once your songs have been downloaded…
You’ll be able to play them even without the Internet.
Note: If you’re not using Wifi, you need to give the app permission to use your cellular data 1st. Or else it won’t download any of the songs you wish to stream offline.
Here’s how you can…
Allow Apple Music to download using your data:
- Go to your Settings.
- Select Apple Music.

Why can’t I listen to Apple Music offline? 5 causes & fixes
#1: Your device is glitching
If your Apple Music was fine yesterday, and this issue just popped out of nowhere…
Your device may simply be glitching.
I know the term “glitch” can seem intimidating.
But really, this just means that your phone is a little out of it than usual.
And what do I mean by this?
Let me give you an example.
Imagine not being able to sleep for 24h.
No matter how used you are to staying up late…
You’ll still most likely feel the effects of not being able to rest for this long.
As a result, you’ll be too tired to work efficiently.
And you might start making mistakes or even forget some of your tasks.
Now, this is precisely what happens to your device when it’s glitching.
But don’t worry.
Just like all you’ll need is a good night of sleep to recover in this scenario…
Your device will also just need a little bit of rest to function well again.
And to give this “rest” to your device, you need to restart it.
Here’s how you can…
Restart iOS devices:
- Turn ON your device.
- Press the power key and the volume up key simultaneously.
- Let go when you feel a vibration.
- Slide the power off option to the right.
- Wait for your device to shut down.
- After 30 seconds, press and hold its power key again.
- Let go once your screen turns white with the Apple logo.
To restart Android devices:
- Turn your phone ON.
- Press and hold the power button.
- Let go of it when a menu pops up.
- Select Restart from the options.
Note: The exact steps might differ depending on your Android device.
After this restart, try playing your downloaded songs again.
If you still can’t play any of your songs offline…
You might need to log out from the app as it’s possible that…
#2: Your account is glitching
In some cases, your account is the 1 having trouble connecting with the Apple Music app.
And when this happens, you need to sign out and relog in again.
So you can reset the data on your app…
And remove any glitches or bugs that may have been associated with your account.
Worry not. It’s easy to…
Sign out from Apple Music:
- Open your app.
- Go to Listen Now.
- Tap your profile on the top-right corner.
- Head to the Account tab.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Click SIGN OUT on the confirmation window.
Try to sign in again later and see if your downloaded songs are now playing offline.

#3: Your subscription has ended
As you know, Apple Music isn’t a free streaming app.
So if you suddenly can’t stream your songs offline…
Your subscription may have ended without you realizing it.
If you can’t remember the last time your card has been charged with your payment…
This is likely the case.
But of course, it’s always better to be sure. So, here’s you can…
Check your Apple Music subscription details:
- Turn ON your device.
- Open the Apple Music app.
- Click Listen Now.
- In the upper right corner, tap your profile.
- From the list, tap Manage Subscription.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Ensure that your payment method is updated.
And subscribe to the app again if your previous 1 just ended.
#4: You haven’t updated your Apple Music app
It’s easy to forget to update your apps.
And I don’t blame you because I’m like that too.
You see, I always rely on the automatic updates feature on my phone…
And I rarely ever check if they actually updated.
But bear in mind that this isn’t a habit you should be too comfortable doing.
Why?
Because updates are essential in making your app run smoothly.
They’re responsible for:
- Adding more features to your app.
- Fixing any recent bugs or flaws of Apple Music.
- Ensuring that your data and information are safe.
So really, there’s no particular reason to avoid them.
With that in mind, here’s how you can…
Update your Amazon Music app.
For iOS devices:
- Turn ON your device.
- Open the App Store.
- In the upper-right corner, tap your profile.
- Scroll down until you find the AVAILABLE UPDATES section.
- Find the Amazon Music app.
- Click the UPDATE beside it.
For Android devices:
- Turn your device ON.
- Open your Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile on the top-right corner.
- Click Manage apps & devices,
- Find the Amazon Music app.
- Click the Update beside it.
Note: If you can’t find the Apple Music app on the list, it’s already running on its latest version.
And while you still have the will to catch up on your updates…
You should also check if:
#5: There’s an update available for your phone
Last year, I purposely delayed a couple of my phone’s software updates.
Why?
Because I wanted to know how it would affect my device.
As a result, the performance of my phone gradually decreased.
Until it even reached the point where some of my apps stopped working.
With that, I learned 1st hand that firmware updates should really be taken seriously.
And you should too.
Because outdated software also causes apps to stop working correctly.
And this might be the reason why you’re experiencing this Apple Music problem.
Trust me. This process won’t take too long to do.
And depending on how fast your Internet is…
It might even be over in just 5 minutes.
Now, here’s how you can…
Update your mobile device
For iOS devices:
- Back up your information.
- Plug your device’s charger into a reliable power source.
- Connect it to your Wifi.
- Head to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap the Download and Install option at the bottom.
For Android devices:
- Connect your device to its power cable.
- Plug the adapter into the wall outlet.
- Turn your phone ON.
- Go to Settings.
- Ensure that you’re connected to Wifi.
- Scroll down and find Software update.
- Tap Download and Install.
Note: There might be slight variations to these steps for Android devices.
Try to stream offline on your Apple Music again after the update.
