Why does my Westinghouse TV won’t turn on?

Your Westinghouse TV won’t turn on due to power source issues. There’s likely a problem with the outlet you plugged your TV into. Or your power cord may be defective. Moreover, a faulty remote could also keep your TV from turning on. And in some cases, it’s due to damages to the TV’s main board.

Westinghouse TV won’t turn on: 9 fixes

#1: Power cycle your Westinghouse TV

Westinghouse TV may not be as popular as Samsung, Sony, or LG.

Yet some still prefer this brand due to its affordability.

It’s just that this TV’s also prone to glitches. And not turning on’s one of its most common issues.

So what’s actually causing that problem?

In most cases, it’s simply due to a temporary hardware malfunction. Which you could easily resolve by power cycling.

Power cycling’s also known as soft resetting or rebooting. Basically, you just restart your TV.

And yes, you can do that even when the TV’s not turning on.

These are the steps to power cycle your Westinghouse TV:

  1. Unplug the TV from the outlet.
  2. Press the TV’s power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Wait for 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Plug the TV back into the outlet.
  5. Try to power it on again.

In most cases, this should be enough to fix the issue.

However, if your TV’s still not turning on…

You may either repeat the process. Or keep it unplugged. And let it cool down for 2 to 3 hours before attempting to turn it back on.

Some users even report that leaving it off and unplugged for 24 hours is what did the trick for them.

#2: Verify if there are issues with the power source

Check if you can see an indicator light on the TV.

Sometimes, even if a Westinghouse TV won’t turn on…

You may still see a red or blue light on the TV.

But if you can’t see any…

Then it’s likely an issue with the power source.

Did you plug your TV into a surge protector?

If so, try to disconnect it from there. And plug it instead into a wall outlet. Since the surge protector might be defective.

“What if I’m already using a wall outlet. And my TV’s still not turning on?”

If that’s the case, check if the outlet’s actually working.

Unplug your TV. And connect another device. Such as a laptop or a smartphone.

If even other devices won’t charge or power on, then the problem’s with the outlet.

So try to plug your TV into a working outlet in your house.

#3: Check for damages on the power cord

Now, if you’ve verified that your outlet’s fine, but the TV still won’t turn on…

There may be a problem with the power cord. This is another common cause why TVs like Westinghouse, Insignia, or RCA won’t turn on.

Perhaps someone may have accidentally walked on it. Or it may be experiencing some wear and tear. Especially if you’ve been using it for a while.

So check for any damages.

You may also try to reseat the cord. Just detach it from the TV. And then reconnect it after about 30 seconds.

If you suspect the cord’s already defective, look for a replacement.

You’ll find many 3rd party power cords compatible with Westinghouse TVs.

Here are a few power cord manufacturers to choose from:

#4: Ensure that your TV’s on the correct input source

Sometimes, if you’re not seeing anything on your screen…

It’s likely because your TV’s on the wrong input. And not really because it won’t turn on.

So let’s say you plugged a media player on HDMI 1. Therefore, your input should also be HDMI 1 to match it.

Otherwise, you’ll see a black screen.

Now changing input on a Westinghouse TV’s really easy.

Just grab your remote. And look for a button that says Source. It’s usually on the upper right of the arrow buttons.

“But what if my remote’s not working?”

No problem. Westinghouse TVs have built-in buttons on them.

You can find them on the TV’s back or on the right side.

Look for something with the label Input. And just keep pressing it until you’re on the correct source.

#5: Replace the remote’s batteries

You also won’t be able to power on your TV if the remote’s not working.

This is also likely the case with your Westinghouse TV.

Like most brands, Westinghouse remotes also use 2 AAA batteries. And they could last anywhere from 1 to 2 years.

So try to replace your remote’s batteries if you’ve been using them for a while.

In addition, you may also try to power cycle the remote.

Yes, it’s actually possible.

Here are the steps to power cycle a Westinghouse TV remote:

  1. Remove the batteries.
  2. Press the remote’s power button for 15 seconds.
  3. Place the batteries back in the remote.

And then check if the remote’s now working. Try to power your TV on again.

#6: Install a remote control app on your smartphone

If fresh batteries and power cycling didn’t fix your remote…

You may also install a remote control app as an alternative.

Westinghouse TVs actually vary in software. Some use the Roku OS. While others have an Android installed in them.

So what you’ll be downloading will depend on your TV’s OS.

I’ll provide download and set up guides for Android and Roku.

If your TV has an Android OS

Step #1: Download and install the Android TV remote app. Available on App Store and Google Play Store.

Step #2: Ensure that your Westinghouse TV and smartphone are on the same WiFi network.

Step #3: Open the Android TV remote app on your phone.

Step #4: Wait for the app to find your TV. And select it when you see it on the app.

Step #5: You’ll see a pairing code on your TV screen. Type it in your phone to confirm the pairing.

Afterward, look for the app’s power button and press it. See if your TV can now turn on.

If your TV has a Roku OS

Step #1: Download the Roku Official Remote Control app. You may get it for free from Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

This app will work on any Roku TV regardless of the manufacturer. And it’s effective in powering on and changing TV inputs.

Step #2: Connect your Westinghouse TV and smartphone to the same WiFi network.

Otherwise, you won’t be able to pair the app with the TV.

Step #3: Launch the remote control app on your phone.

Step #4: Accept the Terms and Conditions. Then wait for the app to find your Westinghouse Roku TV.

Step #5: Click your Westinghouse TV as soon as it appears on the app. The pairing should now be successful.

Step #6: Press the app’s remote icon. You may now try to turn on your TV from there.

#7: Use a universal remote

Aside from remote control apps, another option is to use a universal remote.

Here are some of the brands that are compatible with Westinghouse TVs:

Regardless of the brand, setting up a universal remote control’s really easy. Here’s how:

Step #1: Press the Setup button on the remote.

Step #2: Since you’re using it for your Westinghouse TV, press the TV button.

Step #3: Enter the 3 or 4-digit code for Westinghouse TVs. You should find it in the manual that came with the universal remote.

The remote should start blinking red a few times. Afterward, you may start using it with your TV.

#8: Disconnect all external devices

This is rarely the case. But at times, defective external devices are actually what’s causing a Westinghouse TV not to turn on.

It could be due to an issue with the device itself. Or a problem with the HDMI or RCA cable that’s connecting it to the TV.

Either way, a quick solution would be disconnecting them from the TV.

So try to detach all external devices temporarily.

And then try to power cycle your TV by unplugging and re-plugging into the outlet.

Did your TV turn on?

If it did, this confirms that your TV’s actually working properly. And that the issue’s with one of your external devices. So you may troubleshoot that instead.

#9: Perform a factory reset on your TV

Perform A Factory Reset On Your TV

In case you were able to power on your TV temporarily…

You should consider doing a factory reset.

Mainly because it’s possible that an incorrect TV setting or a corrupted app was the one causing the issue. And it might happen again.

Warning: A factory reset will erase all your TV data. Including your account info. As well as the 3rd party apps you installed.

There are 2 ways you can factory reset your Westinghouse TV:

  • Via Settings.
  • Through the TV’s reset button.

Factory reset via Settings

  1. Press the Menu button on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Scroll down to System and click it.
  4. Select Advanced System Settings.
  5. Navigate to Factory Reset and select it.
  6. Click Factory Reset Everything.

Now, if you’re going to reset through the TV itself, you’ll need either a ballpoint pen or a pin.

The reset button should be at the back of the TV. Besides the HDMI ports.

Factory reset through the TV button

  1. Press and hold the reset button with your pin or ballpoint pen.
  2. Wait for about 10 seconds.
  3. Release the button when you see the Westinghouse logo on your screen.

Bonus: Contact Westinghouse for support

If your Westinghouse TV still won’t turn on, it’s likely due to a hardware defect.

It could be an issue with the backlight. It’s also possible that there’s damage to the main board.

For cases like those, you’ll have to contact Westinghouse.

They don’t recommend that the customers repair the TV on their own. It might only cause further damage. And will void the warranty.

Their customer service hotline number is 1-800-701-0680.

In addition, you may also send a message through their support page.
