Planning on getting a Netflix account?
Or are you just wondering how much Netflix costs in different countries?
Either way, today’s your lucky day.
Because through thorough research and my personal experience…
I know exactly how much Netflix costs on different continents and countries.
So…
Continue reading to find out:
- Which countries pay the most for Netflix.
- Whether or not students can get a discount from their monthly plans.
- The 2 countries that can subscribe to a Mobile Plan, which costs less than $3 a month.
- And this is just the beginning…
How much is Netflix a year in the United States?
Netflix costs $119.88 a year in the United States.
And that’s if you’re going with the cheapest option, the Basic plan.
See, this Basic package only costs $9.99 a month.
And it’s at least $5 cheaper than the Standard package, the next cheapest plan in line.
Now, if you’re wondering…
“Which package is the best for me?”
Well, honestly, only you can decide.
But don’t worry.
I’ll still help you pick which plan is better for you through this chart that shows…
How much each Netflix plan in the US costs every month
Feature | Basic ($9.99) | Standard (15.49) | Premium ($19.99) |
Devices you can simultaneously use | 1 | 2 | 4 |
HD viewing | No | Yes | Yes |
Ultra HD viewing | No | No | Yes |
Now, according to this table…
The Standard plan will cost you $185.88 a year.
And Premium, the most expensive 1, will cost you $239.88 annually.
But before you proceed to subscribe to any of these Netflix plans, bear in mind that…
Depending on which state you live in, you may be charged with additional charges.
Why?
Because Netflix subscriptions are taxed by the US government.
See, way back in 2020…
Several states started filing cases against big streaming platforms like Netflix.
Along with the claim that they owe franchise fee payments to the government.
And since then…
Netflix users from certain states must pay taxes on their monthly plans.
Note: Netflix hasn’t released an official list of all the states taxed by the government.
But if you’re living in a state that has a Sales tax…
Then you’ll most likely have it on top of your monthly Netflix payment as well.
And if you’re wondering…
“How much tax do I need to pay?”
According to Netflix…
“Tax rates can vary by country, state, territory, and city.”
So it’ll follow the general percentage of tax your state deducts on all goods and purchases.
And another common question people usually have is…
“Do I pay less if I’m a student?”
And to answer that, unfortunately, Netflix doesn’t have a student discount.
Although other big streaming platforms like Spotify have designated plans for students…
Netflix hasn’t implemented this setup yet, and it doesn’t seem like they’re planning to do so soon.
How much is Netflix a year in Canada?
Netflix costs (CAD) $119.88 a year in Canada.
Clearly, compared to the United States’ plan prices, they have a much cheaper rate.
Because although they cost the same amount of dollars…
The Canadian dollar is worth less than the US dollar in the world market.
Now, like the plans for the United States…
Netflix packages in Canada also come in 3 different forms:
- Basic.
- Standard.
- Premium.
And their prices go from the cheapest to the most expensive in that same order.
Now, if you’re wondering…
“How much will I spend each year for each, and what benefits will I get?”
Then here’s a chart that you can use for reference to see…
How much each Netflix plan in Canada costs annually (in CAD $)
Feature | Basic ($119.88) | Standard (197.88) | Premium ($251.88) |
Devices you can simultaneously use | 1 | 2 | 4 |
HD viewing | No | Yes | Yes |
Ultra HD viewing | No | No | Yes |
As you can see from this chart…
The features of each package are identical to the American Netflix packages.
And similar to the laws in some states in the US…
Canadian Netflix users are also charged with GST/HST tax on top of their Netflix bills.
Which means regardless of which Netflix plan you pick…
You should be prepared to pay more than the price Netflix has listed.

How much is Netflix a year in Europe?
Netflix costs approximately 110€ a year in Europe.
However, bear in mind that not all European countries use Euro (€) to pay for their plans.
Since some use other currencies like:
- Swiss Franc.
- Pound Sterling.
- Swedish Krona.
But through currency conversion, I’ve found that on average…
The Basic Netflix plan in Europe costs a little over $9 monthly.
This led me to conclude that, on average, Netflix costs 110€ annually in the continent.
Now, if you’re wondering…
“Which European countries pay the least for Netflix?”
The answer to that would be Germany and Austria.
Since their Basic plan only costs 7.99€ a month.

Netflix is the priciest in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Bonus: How to save money while streaming Netflix
While the prices of Netflix subscriptions vary depending on where you live…
I’m pretty sure everyone, including me, loves to cut back on their expenses whenever possible.
So if you’re thinking of ways to lower that monthly payment on Netflix, I got you.
See, I know 2 smart ways you can save more money while still enjoying the platform.
Curious?
Here’s the first 1…
Share an account with your friends or family
As you probably know by now…
Netflix’s Standard and Premium plans allow you to use more than 1 device simultaneously.
And what a waste of money if you’re not utilizing that feature wisely, right?
So my advice to you is…
Ask some people you trust if they want to share a Netflix account with you.
Of course, make it clear that you’re not asking for it for free.
And ensure that they understand that you want to split the bill, making it a win-win situation.
Now, before you proceed with this lifehack, however…
Important: Ensure that the password of the account you’re sharing is only made for Netflix. Never share a password you use for personal, especially financial, accounts with anyone. Even if you’re close with them.
So just keep that in mind, and you’ll be good to go.
Now, for the 2nd tip…
Consider choosing T-Mobile as your cellular provider
Wouldn’t it be great if you could watch Netflix for free?
Then if you’re in the United States, you’ll be glad to know that…
The cellular company T-Mobile gives its customers a free Netflix standard subscription.
But that’s if they’re subscribed to their Magenta Plus plan.
So if you’re serious about saving up and reducing your Netflix monthly costs…
Nothing’s a better option than a free 1, right?
However, you must consider everything that comes with their plan.
