HBO Max not working on Sony TV: 5 fixes

#1:  Check if your Sony TV is compatible

HBO Max is available on a wide selection of TVs.

However, not all Sony TVs can run the streaming platform.

Luckily, only TVs that were manufactured from 2015 or earlier aren’t compatible with HBO Max.

So what if yours is a model from 2016 and above, but it still won’t run the app? If that’s the case, then you might need a firmware update.

Reminder: Your TV needs to run on webOS 5 or higher to use HBO Max. Updates on your Sony TV will come automatically while you’re connected to the internet.

Just in case your connection runs into problems, and the update stops, here’s how to do it manually:

  1. Press the Home button.
  2. Head to Apps.
  3. Select Help.
  4. Select Status and Diagnostics.
  5. Select System Software Update.
  6. Install any available updates.

Reminder: Avoid disconnecting from the internet or turning off your Sony TV during a firmware update. This can cause problems with the operating system.

#2: Check if your internet connection is good

Check If Your Internet Connection Is Good

HBO Max needs a minimum of 5mbps to stream shows and movies in 1080p.

However, If you want to go for 4k streaming, aim for 25mbps.

Before you proceed with the internet troubleshooting steps below, do a speed test first. Check out Fast or Ookla for a quick and free internet diagnosis.

Reminder: For accurate results, open these websites on your Sony TV’s web browser.

Now, on to a few troubleshooting tips to improve your internet connection speed.

Reset your internet

  1. Turn off your router and unplug it.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on.

Switch to a wired network (Sony TVs from 2020 and above)

  1. Connect your ethernet cable to the back of your TV and your router.
  2. Wait for the TV to connect automatically.

  2. Press the Menu button on your remote.
  3. Select Network and Internet.
  4. Select Easy Setup.
  5. Select Wired LAN.

However, these troubleshooting steps might not be enough. If you aren’t getting the speed as noted on your data plan, I suggest calling your service provider for help.

Note: Try to move your router or your TV closer together. Wi-Fi connections are at their best within 10-20 feet.

Additionally, there shouldn’t be physical obstructions like doors and walls between your router and Sony TV.

#3: Delete your Sony TV’s cache and data

Your Sony TV stores data from apps like HBO Max. This helps the app and your browser run faster.

However, the cache holding the data will be full over time. This can cause apps to work slowly or malfunction entirely.

Luckily, you can clear your Sony TV’s cache and data in a few steps.

  1. On the Google TV main menu, go to Screen.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select See All Apps.
  5. Look for HBO Max.

Reminder: The download process will include the app and the updates. With that, get ready as this might take a while.

Additionally, you’ll have to log in to your account again after the download.

#5: Check if HBO Max is available in your region

The streaming platform is available in a lot of regions, but not all of them.

Check out this HBO page for a list of where the service is ready to use.

Sadly, there’s not much you can do but wait for HBO to enable the platform in your region.

Note: A workaround to this is to access HBO Max using a VPN service.

However, VPNs are complicated to use in smart TVs. I suggest using your PC’s web browser or your smartphone and tablet instead.
