Why does my Samsung TV say No Signal?
Your Samsung TV says No Signal due to selecting the wrong source. The external device isn’t firmly attached or broken. Or the HDMI port is clogged. The devices may have bugs and need an update.

#1: The wrong source is being used
Nobody goes out of the house with mismatched shoes.
Unless you’re rushing out the door. Then, expect a few laughs from your friends.
It doesn’t only look funny. It just doesn’t work!
Your Samsung TV believes in that concept too. And it follows what you choose to do.

Most Samsung TVs may have some or all of these ports, which are:
- VGA.
- USB.
- HDMI.
- HDMI/DVI.
- Headphone.
- AV/Component.
- Digital Audio O/P.
You may be in a hurry to finally relax in front of your TV.
So hurriedly, in fact – that you chose the wrong input source.
Of course, nothing will appear. Causing the No Signal display.

Now, on which port did you connect your external device to?
For example, you inserted your gaming console in the HDMI1 port. Remember that, and adjust the source on your TV.
There are three ways to do this:
- Using the Source button.
- Going to the Main Menu.
- Changing it once the device is plugged.
To choose the source on your Samsung TV with the Source button:
- Get your Samsung TV remote.
- Find the Source button. It’s at the top right.
- Press the Source button.
- The different sources will appear on your screen. Select the source where you inserted your device. In our example, it’s HDMI1.
- Wait for No Signal to disappear.
To choose the source on your Samsung TV on the Main Menu:
- Get your Samsung TV remote.
- Find the Menu button. It’s on the left of the Samsung Smart TV logo.
- Press the Menu button.
- The Main Menu will appear on your TV.
- Scroll down. Look for Source.
- You’ll see the list of sources. Choose the source where you inserted your device. In our example, it’s HDMI1.
- Wait for No Signal to disappear.
To choose the source on the automatic pop-up:
- Plug in your device into one of the ports. In our example, it’s HDMI1.
- A source selection will appear on your TV.
- Select the source where you inserted your device.
- Wait for No Signal to disappear.
Following these steps, the correct display should come up.

#2: The external device isn’t connected correctly

Put your HDMI cable where it belongs
Go to the back of your Samsung Smart TV. Take a look at the cables you connected.
Are any of them loose? Push them in the port. And adjust when necessary.
The source list should pop up on your screen. Then, choose the correct input source.

Another HDMI cable may do the job
Still didn’t sort out the problem? Use another HDMI cable.
You may have an extra HDMI cable from another device.
If it works on the second HDMI cable, the first one may be broken. Maybe it’s about time to get a new one?
Replace the HDMI cable

#3: The external device is incompatible or broken
At last, you got a new Roku Streaming stick! Can’t wait to get this bad boy started.
“What? No Signal? How could this be?”
Relax. There may be nothing wrong with your external device.
Think. When was the last time you bought your smart TV?
If it’s at least 6 years ago… it’s highly likely that your smart TV is incompatible. Especially with the new streaming devices and gaming consoles in the market.
Of course, you shouldn’t rule out that your external device may be broken.
These devices require TVs that can support 4k and HD displays.
Does your Samsung TV have these features? If not, then this causes the “No Signal” issue.
But if your Samsung TV has the right specs. Let’s try out other troubleshooting methods.
Multiple input ports couldn’t be more convenient
Some models of Samsung TVs have more than one HDMI port.
Unplug your HDMI cable from the TV. Then, test it out on the other HDMI ports.
At least one of them should work. Don’t forget to select the correct input source on your TV.
Note: Gently remove the HDMI cable. And ensure that it’s firmly attached in the port. This is to avoid damages to the port and the cable.
Your streaming stick may work on another device
Some streaming external devices can work on both TVs and computers.
Connect your external device to another gadget. See if it experiences any connection issues.
Does it work perfectly? Your Samsung TV may be the problem. And your external device doesn’t have any issues.

#4: There are pending software updates
Just when you thought your Samsung TV couldn’t get any better.
It CAN get even better.
From time to time, Google churns out improvements for their products’ software.
These improvements come in the form of updates.
Outdated software might pose some problems for your TV. Including its function to detect the signal.

You must manually update your TV’s software.
To do this:
- Get your TV’s remote.
- Press the Menu button.
- Go to Settings.
- Choose Support.
- Select Software Update.
- Hit Update Now.
#5: The TV port is dirty
They say, “A cluttered house is a cluttered mind.”
Anything truer than that? Moving around and working is so difficult in a messy home.
This is also true for your Samsung TV ports.
Dust settles in every crevice of your house. On any surface.
The TV ports – though considered small openings – are literal dust magnets.
We don’t put much thought into them. Heck, you may not even examine it.
But dust, loose fibers, and other pollutants in the air can pile up in there.
And these sneeze-inducing particles can clog them. Creating a barrier. Between your TV and the external device’s cable.
Thus, communication issues happen. And the No Signal message appears.
Well, how do we fix this? By cleaning!
Clean the input ports the right way
These input ports are very sensitive. They shouldn’t get too wet. So as not to mess up the wirings inside the TV.
Step 1: Turn off the TV.
Step 2: Get a lint-free cloth and some denatured alcohol.
Step 3: Clean the input ports with the cloth. Only apply a small amount of denatured alcohol.
Step 4: Make sure the denatured alcohol dries.
Step 5: Turn on the TV.
Step 6: Connect the external device cables.
Step 7: See if the No Signal message is cleared.
#6: The TV and external device are experiencing bugs
Oh, dear. Maybe your devices just need some compassion.
Their insides are called “soft”-ware for a reason. Get it?
It’s inevitable. Devices used daily for multiple hours a day give and collect so much data.
Thus, their overall processes may get overloaded. Or experience a few glitches here and there. Impeding it from finding the signal.
While you get a glass of wine to reset. Preparing for the next day. Your Samsung TV needs a reboot once in a while too.
There are two ways to do this:
- Resetting.
- Restarting.
Usually, restarting would be enough to get rid of these bugs. Resetting should only be done when all else fails.
Warning: Resetting removes all your existing data and configurations. It puts your device back to factory default settings. Take note of all your preferences.
Restarting your external device would also help too.
Restarting your Samsung TV and external device
All your data is safe in this process. It takes just a short minute.
To restart your devices:
- Get your Samsung TV’s remote control.
- Press the Power button.
- Be sure that the TV is completely turned off. You may see a signal light to confirm this.
- If your external device has an off switch, deactivate it too.
- Unplug the external device from the TV’s port.
- Unplug the Samsung TV from the power source.
- Wait for 30 seconds to a minute.
- Plug the TV back to the power source.
- Press the Power button on the remote.
- Wait for the TV to completely turn on.
- Reconnect the external device’s cable in the TV port.
- Choose the correct input source.
Here, wait for the connection to happen. No Signal should already be gone.
Resetting your Samsung TV
This should only be a last resort. Collect all the necessary info before doing this.
To reset your Samsung TV:
- Open Settings.
- Choose General.
- Select Reset.
- Type your PIN. (0000 is the default PIN)
- Choose Reset.
- Select OK.
Now, wait for your TV to restart. All your settings will be gone. And hopefully, the No Signal message too.
There’s also a way to reset that targets your HDMI.
To reset your HDMI:
- Press the Power button on your remote.
- Once the TV is off, unplug it.
- Wait for 10 minutes. Make sure no external devices are connected.
- Press Mute, 1, 8, 2, and Power.
- The TV will turn on with the Factory Reset Screen.
- Select Option.
- Choose Factory Reset. The reset process will start. Then, the TV will turn off.
- Press Power. You’ll see the original set up menu.
- Plug your external device into the port.
By this time, your device’s connection will be fixed.
