Why is AirPlay not working on my LG TV?
AirPlay isn’t working on your LG TV because of compatibility problems. Other reasons include connection and software issues. Also consider bugs, operating system updates, and the distance between both devices.
AirPlay not working on LG TV: 13 fixes
#1: Check if your LG TV is AirPlay-ready
Not all LG TVs are compatible with AirPlay. If your TV is one of these below, running AirPlay shouldn’t be a problem:
Year | OLED | UHD |
2020 | BX, CX, GX, WX, ZX, RX | UN Series, NANA Series |
2019 | B9, C9, E9, W9, Z9 | UM Series, SM Series |
2018 | UK Series, SK Series |
Note: LG TVs from 2021 and above are all compatible with AirPlay.
And if you have a 2017 LG TV model, you’ll need an upgrade to run AirPlay.
Moreover, according to LG, there are two ways to check for your TV’s model.
First, you can try checking the back of the TV. There should be a sticker with the TV model placed on the right side of the screen.
If your TV is mounted and you can’t check the back, do this instead:
- Press the Settings button on your remote.
- Click the three-dot icon.
- Head to Devices.
- Head to TV.
#2: Update your LG TV’s OS
An outdated firmware can also prevent AirPlay from working properly.
You can see the OS version in the same menu when looking at your TV’s model.
Now, LG TVs with webOS version of 4.0 and above can run AirPlay.
And if your LG TV is connected to a network, the software update will happen automatically.
You can update your LG TV without a network connection too. To do this, you should:
- Visit LG’s product support page and enter your TV’s model number there.
- Download and unzip the file on a USB.
- Insert the USB at the back of your TV.
- Follow the instructions.
#3: Update your Apple device
Firmware updates help sort out bugs and glitches. This includes problems that prevent AirPlay from working properly.
Your Apple device notifies you if there’s an update that’s ready to be installed. You can check this manually by:
- Heading to Settings.
- Tapping on General.
- Selecting Software Update.
#4: Make sure both devices are connected to the same network.
AirPlay runs on an internet connection. And both your Apple device and your LG TV need to be on the same network.
Note: It’s fine if one device is connected to the network via Wi-Fi and the other through a wired connection. As long as it’s on the same network.
On your Apple device, you can check your connection details by:
- Heading to Settings.
- Selecting Wi-Fi.
- Checking your connection.
On your LG TV, you can do it by:
- Pressing Settings on your remote.
- Go to Network/Connection.
- Select Wi-Fi.
#5: Check if your connection is fast enough
“Why is my AirPlay skipping? When it’s not, the quality is so poor!”
That’s because the connection speed matters too. According to Apple, the recommended bandwidth for AirPlay is 25mbps.
A higher speed is required if you want the resolution to reach its max of 1080p. To check your connection speed, use Fast.
Note: The speed on your TV and Apple device needs to be above 25Mbps each.
If the speed isn’t above the recommended bandwidth, you might want to contact your service provider.
#6: Disconnect other devices from the network
There are ways to improve your connection speed without paying extra.
An easy way to do this is by disconnecting other devices from the Wi-Fi. Close those that aren’t being used.
You see, devices compete with one another for your network’s bandwidth. That causes a slower connection.
Fun Fact: Most networks can accommodate up to 255 devices! That would result in awful speeds, though.

#7: Bring your devices closer to one another
Distance can affect your AirPlay’s connectivity too.
Apple notes that the distance of AirPlay can be as far as your Wi-Fi connection. For a smoother mirroring experience, you should go further than 30 feet from your LG TV.
Moreover, using AirPlay when your LG TV is in a different room shouldn’t be a problem.
Just make sure that there aren’t obstructions between both devices. Those include:
- Doors.
- Furniture.
- Thick walls.
- Appliances/knick-knacks in front of your LG TV.
#8: Switch to a wired connection for your LG TV
Wireless connection may be convenient but wired connections can bring the best speeds.
All LG TVs have a port for an ethernet cable at the back. Connect your TV through your router via the cable.
This connects your LG TV to the internet automatically. And it can make your LG TV’s connection speed faster.
Additionally, it lessens the number of devices connected to Wi-Fi. Even your Apple device could get a slight speed boost as well.
#9: Reset your router
Doing this can help solve AirPlay problems related to your connection.
Simply turn off your router and leave it that way for 30 seconds.
With that, the speed of your connection can improve by a small margin with a reboot.
Warning: Doing this turns off your Wi-Fi and disconnects all devices. Before doing this, make sure that none of your connected devices are in the process of updating.
#10: Reset your LG TV
Software bugs and glitches can occur with extended use of your LG TV.
But don’t worry…
You don’t need to do much to resolve these other than soft resetting your TV.
Just turn off your TV and leave it that way for 30 seconds. If you want a hard reset, do this:
- Press the Settings button on your remote.
- Choose General.
- Choose Reset.
- Confirm and enter your PIN. If you didn’t change your PIN, the default PIN is 1234.
Reminder: This is a factory reset. This means your LG TV will revert to its initial version on purchase. It’ll remove the OS, app preferences, network settings, and accounts on the TV.
#11: Reset your Apple device
Doing this can help refresh your Apple device, which can sort out a few issues. You can reset it by:
- Holding down the power and volume down button.
- Drag the slider to turn off the device.
- Leave it off for 30 seconds before turning it on.
But remember, this is different from a factory reset.
Only a soft reset is required for AirPlay problems.
However, if AirPlay isn’t working for your LG TV as well as other devices, it’s still worth trying.
So, here’s how to do a factory reset:
- Go to Settings.
- Head to General.
- Choose Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Choose “Erase All Content And Settings.”
Reminder: Make sure to save your important files on the cloud storage before doing a factory reset.
If your Apple device is still not running AirPlay properly, you should contact Apple support for thorough troubleshooting.
#12: Switch to 2.4 GHz connection
Apple and LG TVs automatically connect to Wi-Fi using a 5 GHz network band. This does allow for faster speeds, but it’s better at small distances.
If your home’s router is far from your Apple device or LG TV, switching to 2.4 GHz is better.
From your Apple device, do this by:
- Opening Settings.
- Clicking Wi-Fi at the top of the list.
- Looking for the connection with the number 2 at the end of the name.
- Click “Connect.”
From your LG TV, do this by:
- Opening Settings.
- Selecting Network.
- Selecting Wi-Fi.
- Looking for the connection with a 2 at the end of the name.
For more information about connecting your LG TV to a Wi-Fi network, watch this:
Note: Not all routers have multiple network bands. Check your router’s label located at the bottom. This usually contains details about which networks are available.
If it’s not there, take note of your router’s model and search for its specs online.
#13: Contact LG or Apple support
“I’ve done everything but AirPlay still won’t work on my LG TV!”
This can be an annoying problem to face.
So when you’ve tried every fix we have above, but AirPlay still isn’t working properly, it’s time to call for support.
Apple and LG’s support teams have the solution you need. They can run you through in-depth troubleshooting to fix the problem.
That’s because they can help detect if it’s a hardware issue that’s preventing AirPlay from working.
