How to reset a Haier refrigerator?

To reset a Haier refrigerator, unplug the unit and replug it after 60 seconds. If the problem persists after that, hard reset the appliance by unplugging it for about 40 minutes. Then, adjust the fridge’s temperature to the recommended setting by pressing the “Temp” button on the control panel.

7 steps to reset a Haier refrigerator

#1: Unplug the appliance

Haier refrigerators have no reset buttons.

So, you can only reset it by cutting off its power supply.

And you can do that in 2 ways:

  • Unplug the unit from the power source.
  • Switch OFF the fridge’s circuit breaker.

Regardless of which, your goal is to remove the power current running on it. So that the fridge’s motor and compressor can reboot and fix minor errors.

“But which one should I do?”

As much as possible, do the first option. Unplug the refrigerator from the power socket. As this is the most effective way to remove electricity from your appliance.

But if you can’t unplug it due to inaccessibility, you can just switch OFF the fridge’s circuit breaker.

When you switch OFF the circuit breaker, a fuse stops the electricity from going to your fridge.

While that somehow cuts off the fridge’s power supply…

Physically removing your refrigerator from the power source is still the best way to do it.

#2: Let it sit for 60 seconds

Once you’ve unplugged the fridge, wait for at least 60 seconds.

The reason:

Your refrigerator would need a certain amount of time to completely shut down its system. And that’s necessary for your appliance to fix any power-related or mechanical issues.

“Will it defrost my fridge?”

No. Leaving your refrigerator unplugged for 60 seconds won’t quickly affect its internal temperature.

It would take several minutes or even hours before your fridge can defrost.

So, no need to worry about food spoilage. As it won’t affect the preservation of your fresh and wet food supplies.

#3: Replug the unit

After 60 seconds, replug your Haier refrigerator.

Or switch ON its circuit breaker if you’ve switched it OFF.

To see whether the reset process is successful, review this checklist:

  • Is the fridge interior light ON?
  • Is the control panel working?
  • Are all the control buttons functional?
  • Are the compressor and condenser running?

If you’ve answered YES to all of the questions, then congratulations! You’ve successfully reset and fixed the error on your Haier refrigerator.

If you answered NO to some or all of the questions, redo steps #1 to #3. Or try the other troubleshooting method below.

#4: Unplug the appliance for 40 minutes

“Unplugging my fridge for 60 seconds didn’t work. What should I do next?”

If that’s the case, hard reset your refrigerator.

Technically, a hard reset follows the same process. Except that you’ve to unplug your appliance for about 40 minutes.

The reason:

Unplugging your fridge for 60 seconds shuts off its system. But unplugging it for 40 minutes helps the compressor and condenser get back to their default setting.

Which not only fixes errors but improves the fridge’s overall cooling function.

Note: Since a hard reset would take more than half an hour, transfer your goods to a separate container.

For wet and highly-perishable goods, transfer them to a cooler with ice. Doing this helps continue to preserve your food supplies.

Also, put a rug underneath your fridge as this will defrost your unit.

Here’s how to do a hard reset:

  1. Empty your fridge and freezer.
  2. Prepare a rug or towel underneath the fridge.
  3. Unplug the refrigerator. Or switch OFF its circuit breaker.
  4. Wait for 40 minutes.
  5. Replug the unit. Or switch ON its circuit breaker.
  6. Setup the refrigerator.

#5: Adjust the temperature

Adjust The Temperature

Done hard-resetting your refrigerator?

Then, your next step is to adjust its temperature to the recommended setting.

The FDA suggests setting your refrigerator at 40°F (4°C). For the freezer, it should be set at least 0°F (-18°C).

To adjust the temperature on a Haier refrigerator:

  1. Locate the control panel. Usually at the front.
  2. Search for the  “Temp” button. Next to the number display.
  3. Press it multiple times until you reach your desired setting.

Some Haier fridge models have manual temperature dials.

They have numbers 1 to 7 as their temperature setting. “1” being the warmest, and “7” being the coldest.

If you’re using this type of model, choose “4” as your fridge temperature setting. This sits at around 38°F (3.3°C) to 40°F (4°C), which is the recommended setting.

Note: You can set it higher but never lower than that.

#6: Wait for 24 hours for the fridge to cool

Next, allow your fridge to cool for up to 24 hours.

“Why 24 hours? That’s freaking long!”

It is.

And that’s because the fridge’s compressor and condenser coils would need enough time to run to their regular operation. Especially when you’ve turned your unit OFF for almost an hour.

Depending on the situation, it would take several hours or a whole day for your fridge to cool correctly.

And several factors contribute to that, including the:

  • Ambient temperature.
  • Age of your appliance.
  • Condition of the door gasket.
  • Health of the compressor and condenser.

“Is it safe to store food at this stage?”

You can store veggies, snacks, and other dry goods while waiting for the fridge to cool.

In fact, you can even store wet food at this point since the freezer is technically in operation. But just to be sure, continue storing them in another fridge or a cooler filled with ice.
